A few years back, I was attending a team event outdoors and as part of one of the activities, I was required to walk on a tightrope for a short distance. I balanced myself on the tightrope and as I focused to put my next step forward, I realized that I was losing my balance.
Every time I would look down and try to put the next step, I almost lost my balance. I looked up, balanced myself and as I looked ahead towards the finishing line, where this rope ends, I realized I could stabilize myself. I learned an important lesson - that I needed to look a little ahead not just on the immediate next step.
That reminds me of another story when a small girl was trying to ride on a bicycle. She tried hard to get her balance and she couldn't. The father comes and tells her not to focus on the front wheel of the bicycle, but to look ahead, a little ahead in the distance, and the moment the child did it, she was able to get her balance on the bicycle.
An important lesson for us. We should not always be looking at only the next step that we are going to take. We need to look a little ahead where are we heading, what is our goal.
Imagine if we are walking just looking at the next step and our head is down. Then as we are walking we might just hit ourselves against a wall and be taken by surprise, but if we are looking ahead and if we see an obstacle, we will already start thinking of how we can overcome that and reach our goal.
So, instead of just focusing on the next step, we need to look a little ahead and plan accordingly.
