Leadership lesson from the life of a tree

June 8th, 2021

Nature teaches us a lot of life lessons - life lessons, management lessons, leadership lessons. Let's learn something from the life of a tree.

A tree can prosper, thrive and be fruitful when it is supported from all different directions - from the bottom, from the sides and from the top.

From the bottom, the tree is supported through the roots. It gets nutrients and water from the soil. From the sides, the tree is supported by good weather conditions. From the top, the tree is supported by sunlight, and when the tree gets the right kind of support and conditions, a tree can prosper, be fruitful and be productive.

Such is the case for a leader. A leader needs support from the bottom - from the team. The leader has to be aligned with the team and have a common vision, common purpose, common set of goals.

A leader needs support from the surroundings - from the peers, from colleagues, for a culture and an environment of collaboration.

From the top - the leader needs support from the senior leaders, from the top management.

Is your organization giving the right kind of ambience for the growth of your leaders? From the bottom, from the sides and from the top?

An important lesson that we learn from a tree - for a leader to thrive and to be fruitful and productive, the culture of the organization has a role to play.
