What is an effective way of eliminating dis-empowering thoughts and negative thoughts?

I don't want to think about it, I don't want to get angry. 

What happens when somebody says I don't want to get angry? 

I don't want you to think about a red elephant. I don't want you to think about a red elephant. What are you thinking of? Most probably you're thinking about a red elephant. 

Similarly when somebody says I don't want to get angry, probably anger is building up inside so 'I don't want to get angry' doesn't help. 

So what would be an effective way of eliminating such kind of dis-empowering thoughts and negative thoughts? 

Let's take an example of this bottle and the water inside the bottle. Our minds work similar to what you see about this bottle which is filled with colored water. When clear water starts falling on the bottle, little by little the dark colored water spills out and the water in the bottle becomes clear. 

Likewise, instead of struggling to remove negative thoughts and dis-empowering thoughts from our minds, instead let's focus on filling our minds with thoughts of joy, love, peace and hope and when we do that dis-empowering thoughts and negative thoughts will go away and what will remain? What will remain is thoughts of joy, peace, love and hope.
